A pain in the back is one thing, but the kinks and uncomfortable pains that happen in our necks can be absolutely unbearable. These pains are one of the reasons that plenty of our patients stop in and visit the chiropractor in the first place, which is why we chose to make this week’s wellness tips entirely about ways to avoid these awful pains.
Hydration is Key
Staying hydrated is important for more than one reason, but it is something that needs to be taken care of and prioritized throughout the day. While it isn’t a direct connection to your neck, hydration does deeply affect the comfort that you’re experiencing. The reason behind this is that the discs in your vertebrae within your spine need water to maintain their disk height. This also plays a part in your spinal alignment and the overall pressure that you experience on your spine. Hydration plays a huge part in back pain and health and is necessary if you want to be maintaining comfort.
Find the Right Chair
In the case of most adults, a day at work is spent sitting in front of a computer, and once you’re home from work time is spent slouched over on the couch or the Laz-E-Boy. While these are entirely inevitable, and more often than not, necessary, it is important that you consider your choice in a chair. The type of chair that you sit in will play a big part in the comfort of your neck and back in general. Look for chairs that have higher support levels so that you can maintain the support throughout the day and experience less back pains overall.
Increase Magnesium Intake
The vitamins and nutrients that you take in will greatly affect your body, in more ways than one. Magnesium is one of the minerals that does contribute to your neck comfort, and also, frequently on the lower intake level for adults. If you have low magnesium levels, there are a few ways that you can increase your intake. Through standard diet, you can increase the amount of fruits, vegetables, soy products, grains and beans that you’re eating. But you can also increase intake through Epsom salt baths where the magnesium will be absorbed through your skin or take magnesium supplements in a suggested dosage.
Neck pains are uncomfortable, but they are avoidable. Taking advantage of these tips will decrease the chances of you experiencing this type of pain but will also improve your overall back health. There are a few other things that you can do for your neck, for example sleeping on a water pillow or icing on a routine basis, but those are all topics for another blog post.
